Platform

One platform across the patient journey.

Umoja Afya EHR connects clinical, operational, medication, diagnostic, financial and administrative workflows around one longitudinal patient record.

The goal is not to digitize isolated departments. It is to create a coherent operating environment in which the patient record, encounter context, care team, workflow state and next action remain connected.

17API router domains in the current release
244flowsheet variables in the product foundation
5current business-development markets represented in the hosted demonstration

Why those five countries? Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan and Rwanda are represented because Umoja currently has ongoing business-development activity in those markets. They are not a geographic limit: the platform can be customized, localized and deployed in any country.
Core workflow domains

Designed around the work healthcare teams actually do.

Patient Access

Registration, patient identity, scheduling, arrival, admission, transfer, discharge and patient search.

Clinical Documentation

Patient chart, history, diagnoses, problems, allergies, notes, assessments, flowsheets and chart review.

Provider Voice Notes

Provider dictation and audio-to-text clinical documentation using the self-hosted transcription service, with provider review before completion.

Nursing

Patient assignments, vital signs, head-to-toe assessments, intake/output, care plans, education and handoff.

Orders

Medication, laboratory, imaging, procedure, consult, diet, activity and nursing orders with review before signing.

Medication Management

Medication reconciliation, pharmacy workflow, eMAR, scheduled/PRN doses, administration history and safety logic.

Emergency

Trackboard, triage, acuity, room assignment, care team, outstanding work, disposition and walk-in workflows.

Laboratory

Order-to-result workflow including collection, processing, result review and critical-result handling.

Radiology

Imaging orders, scheduling, status, interpretation, result review and future RIS/PACS integration pathways.

Inpatient & Bed Flow

Patient lists, bed management, rounding context, transfers, discharge readiness and transitions of care.

Operating Theatre

Case request, pre-op, intra-op, PACU and postoperative workflow foundation.

Revenue & Operations

Billing, workqueues, coverage/benefit checks, follow-up and operational queue management.

Administration & Audit

Users, roles, facilities, units, access policies, configuration and auditable system operations.

Record-first design

The selected patient stays at the center of the work.

The Patient Station concept demonstrates how identity, encounter status, care team, insurance/coverage, previous encounters, clinical alerts, workqueues and next-step actions can be brought into one context.

  • Patient identity and encounter context remain visible.
  • Registration, transfer, discharge, print and chart actions are explicit.
  • Workqueues and readiness checks are linked to the selected record.
  • Walk-in workflows can begin without abandoning patient context.
  • Synthetic demonstration data supports safe product evaluation and training.

Operations

Healthcare runs on queues, handoffs and next actions.

Workqueue Management is designed to make operational workload visible across registration, billing, documentation, authorization, follow-up and other service areas.

Explicit status

Make waiting, checked-in, ready, overdue, deferred, high-priority and completed states visible.

Operational ownership

Organize work by team, service area, queue owner and facility context.

Technology foundation

A deployable application stack—not just interface concepts.

The current product is built around a Python/FastAPI backend, PostgreSQL persistence, a browser-based Progressive Web App, Dockerized services and Traefik-based routing in the hosted environment.

FastAPI application

Clinical, operational, administrative and interoperability API domains.

PostgreSQL

Production persistence with SQLAlchemy data access and migrations.

Docker + Traefik

Containerized deployment with HTTPS routing and service isolation.

FHIR R4 foundation

Starter FHIR service and interface-outbox direction for external integrations.

Provider speech-to-text

Separately containerized, self-hosted transcription supports dictation and audio-to-text note workflows without requiring a paid external transcription SaaS.
